The funny thing about reaching a milestone – a birthday, perhaps, or an anniversary celebration – is that despite how it describes what we are and how far we’ve come, it also lends a feeling of uncertainty about what lies beyond the edges. The publication of ultra 6 coincides with the 50th anniversary of the school of architecture, planning, and landscape at the university of Calgary. Fifty years is no insignifi cant amount of time: five decades, two-and-a-half generations, and thousands of graduates who have passed through the school to make their mark on the built environment and design industry. 50% Is also a sort of half-life, a gamble split between two odds, a guess at what might be on the other side.
Between accident or intention, this edition finds itself tethered to the legacy of the institution as a departure point for its theme: extensions beyond the normal. Ultra finds itself as a time capsule of current students’ speculations, reflections, and de- partures upon the discipline – between personal life, academia and practice. As a point of inflection, ultra 6 asks us to pause and reflect on not only our conceptions and understanding of the industry and profession, but additionally, on the contexts that affect how we respond to the world. With drastic global shifts causing deep-rooted issues to sur face, we are forced to face the precipices of what we think we know, and respond quickly to chal lenges vast and unknown. Extensions beyond the normal challenges us to think about who we are, where we want to be, and how we might get there.
